Moving with confidence

August 02, 2019

Navigating your way through the bustling Brisbane City can be difficult at the best of times, but Heather is amazed at how much easier it has become since getting her new Guide Dog, ‘Julia’.

Having ‘Julia’ by her side has helped her continue to work independently and weave her way through the city with confidence.

“I work in the city and it’s so much easier to get around and on and off buses and trains,” Heather said.

“People actually move out of your way when you have a dog which they don’t always do with a cane.”

Qualifying with her first Guide Dog ‘Julia’ isn’t the only big change in Heather’s life. She also moved house 12 months ago and with the support of the team at Guide Dogs, has been able to settle in smoothly without any falls or mishaps.

Instructors helped assess Heather’s home to identify her eligibility to receive NDIS funded aids that would fit into her lifestyle. As she met the eligibility criteria, Guide dogs was able to secure approval from the NDIS to cover the costs of a talking microwave, a hand-held magnifier and more.

With ‘Julia’ by her side and assistive equipment on the way, Heather is able to continue to work full-time and navigate her life with confidence.
