GTB Engineering Goes the Distance – 140km for a Cause!

A massive round of applause to the incredible GTB Engineering team from Tully, who have just completed the legendary Great Wheelbarrow Race – a gruelling 140km relay from Mareeba to Chillagoe—all in support of Guide Dogs Queensland and one very special teammate: Lucy.
Over three days of perfect weather, the nine-person GTB crew pushed not just a wheelbarrow, but also awareness and hope, inspired by Lucy, a beloved member of their team who was born with Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis (LCA) – a rare genetic condition with early onset childhood blindness affecting only 1 in 50,000 births.
Their strength, spirit, and determination were truly something to behold.
And Lucy? She was right there with them. At the end of each day, the team placed her in the wheelbarrow so she could cross the finish line by their side – making her a true champion of the journey.
Originally setting out to raise $10,000, the team has more than doubled their goal, with a phenomenal $26,401 raised. Every cent helps Guide Dogs Queensland to be able to provide life-changing services for children and adults with low vision or blindness.
A bit about the race:
- The Great Wheelbarrow Race is a tribute to early pioneers who once carried their belongings in a wheelbarrow across the rugged terrain.
- It spans three days and 140km, crossing farmlands and savannah country.
- GTB Engineering took on the challenge across the following legs:
- Day 1: Mareeba to Dimbulah – 42km
- Day 2: Dimbulah to Almaden – 65km
- Day 3: Almaden to Chillagoe – 33km
- 48 teams and over 500 participants joined the 2025 event.
No injuries, no setbacks – just passion, perseverance, and a powerful sense of purpose. We couldn’t be prouder of the GTB Engineering team and their dedication to making a difference and pushing the boundaries of what compassion and community can achieve.
