Daily grind leads Sam to life-changing challenge

September 06, 2019

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro for Guide Dogs is a chance for Sam to be a little bit selfish while also doing something incredibly selfless.

In 2020, Sam will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro to help raise an incredible $100,000 to fund the journey two Guide Dogs that will go on to change the lives of two Queenslanders with low or no vision.

“I’ve always been ‘mum’ and I’ve always been working. I’ve never had a chance to do something like this and I would have never even considered it before.”
– Sam, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro for Guide Dogs

Through her mobile coffee business, Sam visits Guide Dogs Queensland every day, which gave her an insight into what Guide Dogs does and the life-changing impact the organisation has for people who are blind or vision impaired.

“I can see what Guide Dogs does and I want to do what I can to help people who need it.

Like so many people, Sam has spent a lot of time raising her children and giving her time to others. The Mt Kilimanjaro climb is a chance for her to continue helping people, while also taking on an enormous personal challenge.

While Sam was keen to take on the climb for personal reasons, it was the chance to fundraise for Guide Dogs that pushed her to say ‘yes’.

By taking part in the adventure of a lifetime, Sam is pledging to help raise an incredible $100,000 so that two blind or vision impaired Queenslanders will have the chance to be matched with a life-changing Guide Dog.

“I’m raising money for people who need something and I can help give them that chance.”

There are still a few spots available on the trek for those who would like to take on the challenge of a lifetime, while also changing someone’s life.

Sam’s advice for those considering taking on the challenge?

“I would say, ‘why not give it a go?’. You don’t know how much you are truly capable of unless you try. If you’re someone who wants to do something to help people, this is an incredible chance.”

“It’s a very personal challenge but it’s not a race. We’re all there to support each other to get up there and make it to the top. There is no way I’m not making it up that mountain.”
