Meeting the New Disabilities Minister

A group of people stand together smiling to the camera. They are in a room with high ceilings and images if politicians are on the walls above them.

As the Peak Body representing individuals with low vision and blindness in Queensland, Guide Dogs Queensland is proudly funded by the state government to advocate for the rights and needs of this community. Last Thursday, Jock Beveridge, CEO of GDQ, and Mandy Fish, Advocacy Manager, had the opportunity to attend a meeting at Parliament House alongside other organisations from the Queensland Disability Peaks Network, representing a range of disabilities.

The meeting was with the new Minister for Disabilities, the Hon. Amanda Camm, who shared a personal story about her connection to the sector, as the niece of someone with a long-term disability. We were impressed by Minister Camm’s capability and her genuine commitment to supporting Peak Body representatives and their missions. As she familiarises herself with her complex portfolio, which also covers Families, Seniors, Child Safety, and Domestic and Family Violence, we are optimistic about her collaborative approach and her willingness to work with the disability sector, including those living with low vision and blindness.

We greatly value your input and would love to hear your thoughts on the priorities for Guide Dogs Queensland’s Advocacy team. If you have any suggestions or areas you would like us to focus on, please share them with us. You can email us at advocacy@gdq.org.au, and our team will carefully review your feedback
