Watching her brother travel the world and chase his goals, all while legally blind, inspired Glynis to take part in Bridge to Brisbane in support of Guide Dogs, with the aim so to help others realise their dreams.
Watching her brother travel the world and chase his goals, all while legally blind, inspired Glynis to take part in Bridge to Brisbane in support of Guide Dogs, with the aim so to help others realise their dreams.
“I have a brother who has been blind his whole life,” Glynis said.
“He was born blind, and regained 30 per cent vision in one eye after a few operations when he was a teenager but was told he’d be completely blind again by the time he was 30.”
Despite being faced with these challenges from birth, Glynis’s brother has been able to utilise his talent to follow his dreams, overcome difficulties and thrive.
“He’s over 70 now and has travelled the world singing and selling platinum records. He has never had to rely on anybody and he can play any instrument you give him – piano, guitar, and saxophone,” Glynis said.
“I thought there would be lots of people who are blind out there who aren’t as lucky as him – he’s lucky because he has a unique talent. Everyone has different talents but his gives him a lot of freedom and I wanted to raise money for those people who don’t have the same opportunities.”
Glynis has been involved in Bridge to Brisbane before, but this year, inspired by her brother, she decided to lend her support to Guide Dogs. By walking for Guide Dogs, Glynis is helping give other people the chance to navigate their lives with confidence.
Guide Dogs aren’t the only dogs benefiting from Glynis’s participation in Bridge to Brisbane. She joked that signing up for Bridge to Brisbane is also good for her own dog, Frank – a very friendly staffy whose walks have increased in the lead up to the event.
While Frank won’t be able to take part in the event, which is only open to dogs with access rights, he will play an important role in helping Glynis prepare.
Glynis has already started her amazing fundraising and plans to reach a goal of $500 before the event.
