Travelling through the festive period?
Travelling over the festive season can be exciting but also busy and unpredictable, so a bit of preparation can make things easier for people who are blind or have low vision as well as travelling with a Guide Dog. Before setting off, contact your airline, accommodation, or transport provider to let them know about your vision needs and any assistance you may require. Keep important items like ID, phone, charger, medication, and dog supplies in an easy-to-reach bag, and use tactile markers or elastic bands to help identify them. It’s also useful to store digital copies of your tickets and itineraries on your phone for quick access using voice-over apps.
For Guide Dog handlers, make sure your dog’s vaccinations and paperwork are up to date, and pack familiar items such as their bed, food bowl, and favourite toys to help them settle in new surroundings. Plan for regular relief breaks and bring water and snacks to keep them comfortable. During your trip, don’t hesitate to ask staff or fellow travellers for help when needed, more often than not most are happy to assist. Use navigation and travel apps designed for accessibility and give yourself extra time to navigate crowded spaces.
Staying organised and taking things at your own pace will help make travel more enjoyable and stress-free for both you and your Guide Dog. With a little planning and preparation, you can enjoy the festive season safely and confidently wherever your travels take you.
