Lucy and Lorna – A Poem by Edwina Smith

An opened notebook with the word 'poetry' written on it.

LUCY AND LORNA.
A POEM BY EDWINA SMITH.

Roly-poly me!

Everything’s a game

Like my brothers and sisters

I now have a name

Growing up so fast

With a coat of gold

Ready to take on the world

At only eight weeks old

Strangers came to see me

A family kind and caring

By car they took me home

A year we will be sharing

They’ll look after me

As I learn and grow

Help me understand

What a puppy needs to know

Lots of fun and play

Pats, praise and cuddles

Then there’s house training

Sure to be some puddles

Puppy preschool

Going out for walks

Making friends with the cat

Her eyes way out on stalks!

The beach and the park

Walking on a lead

Rest, play and exercise

With all the food I need

To grow up strong and healthy

And let’s not forget

Worming, checks and needles

With my trusted vet

In this happy home

Time has flown so fast

And my family knew

‘twas not meant to last

They have raised me well

I can sit, come and stay

Now the day is here

When I must go away

All hearts are breaking

Tears begin to flow

I can feel their sadness

A dog just seems to know

They nurtured me with love

It’s hard to say goodbye

Now to start my training

To become a ‘seeing eye’

So begins the journey

Let’s see what I can do

Staying calm and focused

And how I respond to

A world of distraction

That dogs love or hate

Tail wagging, keen to go

I can hardly wait!

We take lots of walks

Along quiet and busy streets

Gentle words, plenty of pats

Perhaps a few treats

My trainer, kind and patient

Sees progress every day

Preparing me for what’s to be

Leading all the way

Now I train in harness

Up and down some stairs

Through noisy crowds

Going ‘round the chairs

Then to a café

Navigate the door

The smell of pies and cakes

An ice cream on the floor!

Ignoring cats and dogs

Walking straight ahead

Should we ride the bus today?

We’ll take the tram instead

Always keen to please

Adventure doesn’t wane

Heading to the airport

It’s time to catch a plane

Stopping at a kerb

‘Forward’ is the way

If there’s a car

Then I disobey

Until the road is clear

Then off we can go

See all this training

Is not just for show

Lorna has been waiting

Hoping soon to greet

A very special friend

She is yet to meet

One day comes a call

My trainer’s voice is steady

Giving her the good news

A golden lab is ready

For a month or so

We all have great fun

When my trainer says goodbye

Lorna and I are one

We’re a working team

And ‘clicked’ straight away

Our bond forever strong

With her I shall stay

The day starts with breakfast

We walk to catch the bus

People are so amazed

To see the two of us

Waiting at the station

All set and doing fine

We’ll catch the 7.30

Platform number 9

Off the train, down the street

We make our way along

Such a busy time of day

The city’s pulse is strong

Through the door, in the lift

To the seventh floor

We’ve become the best of friends

Who could ask for more!

The phone rings, she’s under way

Lorna works on plans

Amongst her many clients

There are lots of fans

And when the day is done

We’ll settle for the night

Better have a good sleep

We’ve got an early flight

If you ever see us

And wonder what to do

Some people mean well

Others have no clue

Please don’t distract me

Advice that’s very wise

In my guiding harness

I am Lorna’s eyes
