“A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A waterlog stick will do just fine. A dog doesn’t care if your rich or poor, clever, or dull, smart, or dumb. Give him your heart and he’ll give you his.” – John Grogan

When Guide Dog pup Dottie was brought home by her Puppy Raiser Jordyn, a few introductions to other members of the family needed to be made. “I live on a farm, so Dottie has had the pleasure of meeting horses, chickens and lots of ducks,” Jordyn explained.

Although Dottie has met all kinds of animals on the farm, Dottie’s friendship with the household chickens is truly unique. “When Dottie goes into the yard, the chickens come running to greet her”, said Jordyn. They’re often found sunbathing together and the chickens often roost on the doggy gate making sure they’re not too far from their friend Dottie. Dottie and the chickens even have a nighttime routine before bed! “They always make sure Dottie gets a quick kiss goodnight between the bars of the dog gate before they jump up on top of the gate to roost for the night,” said Jordyn.

For anyone who might have a mixed pet household and is thinking about Puppy Raising, Jordyn has this advice. “It’s always worth it to become a Raiser, I think with enough time almost every household pet can form a friendship.

Start with slow introductions! Make sure to control the environment and give it time.”
