Twice a year we open up the opportunity for school-aged kids to spend a week at our Holiday Mobility Camp. The camp is always jam-packed with fun, adventure and often life-long friendships are forged.

Last month we had students travel all the way from the Gold Coast, Toowoomba and even Cairns to come and stay at our Bald Hills campus for the June Holiday Mobility Camp. They thoroughly enjoyed all their trips, which included navigating around Brisbane CBD, going out on shopping excursions, catching public transport and a day trip to Sea World.

In amongst the fun was a lot of learning about orientation and mobility. This included being taught how to use different transport apps, having a go at catching public transport such as trains, buses and ferries, and using technology to independently buy groceries. All of the experiences helped to take their skills to a whole new level.

Jess, Orientation and Mobility specialist, says, “The students were so involved and really got stuck into all the activities.”

“Camp also gave students the opportunity to share their experiences. It was interesting to hear them discuss how they educate the community about living without vision and giving each other ideas on how to answer interesting questions,” remarked Jess.

“It’s amazing to see the change in the students from the start of the camp to the end of the camp. Overall it was a memorable experience for all!”

The next Holiday Mobility Camp is coming up in September, so if you’d like to book a spot, get in quick!
