During a recent week of client training and community engagement, Jeremy delivered a comprehensive workshop for staff at Balcaldine Hospital, focusing on improving care for patients with low vision. The session began with an overview of Guide Dogs services, highlighting their role as trusted specialists in low vision and blindness, and setting the foundation for deeper learning.

Six hospital staff pose outdoors, with two wearing low-vision goggles and holding white canes.

Participants explored the realities of low vision through discussion and hands-on experience, including navigating the hospital environment using low-vision simulator goggles. This practical activity helped staff understand the challenges patients face in everyday situations.

A key component of the workshop addressed communication strategies. Jeremy emphasised the importance of introducing oneself upon entering a room, describing the environment clearly, announcing the presence of others, and explaining procedures before beginning tasks such as taking blood pressure. Staff were encouraged to use descriptive language to help patients maintain awareness and independence.

The training also covered Sighted Guide techniques, allowing participants to practice guiding one another safely under blindfold. This exercise built confidence in supporting patients as they move around the hospital.

Finally, the workshop explored ways to make hospital spaces more accessible. Jeremy shared practical improvements such as reducing trip hazards, enhancing signage, marking steps, and increasing colour contrast throughout patient areas.

By the end of the workshop, Balcaldine Hospital staff had gained valuable skills and insights to create a safer, more inclusive environment for individuals with low vision.
