Adult Orientation & Mobility Advanced Residential Program
On Monday 29th September – Friday 3rd October 2025, GDQ hosted three clients at our Residential Advanced O&M program. They travelled from Townsville, Sunshine Coast and Northern Brisbane to attend this program. It was the first time the client from Townsville had flown independently to Brisbane!
For many people living with low vision or blindness, especially those in regional or remote areas, opportunities to connect with others who share similar experiences can be rare.
Onsite at GDQ, in Sandgate and in Brisbane CBD, they experienced using trains, buses, navigated crowded malls, used busy staircases and escalators. They used Audio Tactile Signals (ATS) to cross busy streets, followed the “braille trail” in Queen Street mall and used technology on their phones such as Google Maps, Google Live View, Seeing AI, and the TransLink apps to assist with travel preparation and navigation. These hands-on experiences are essential for developing greater independence and confidence when navigating day-to-day life.
Throughout the program, participants work alongside both skilled instructors and supportive peers. Together, they share stories, celebrate progress, and encourage one another as they tackle new challenges. The result is a powerful blend of learning, empowerment, and connection; helping each person take important steps toward more confident and independent travel.
