Staying physically and socially active is key to maintaining both mental and physical well-being. For individuals with low vision or blindness, finding accessible ways to stay active and connected has never been easier. From fitness apps to social groups, here are some practical suggestions to help you stay engaged and thrive this year.

1. Accessible Fitness Apps

You don’t need a gym membership to stay fit. There are many accessible fitness apps that offer audio-guided workouts. Apps like Aaptiv, Fitness Blender, and Sworkit provide easy-to-follow routines for strength, yoga, and cardio—all with step-by-step audio instructions.

2. Outdoor Activities

Getting outdoors is a great way to stay active. Consider walking or running with your Guide Dog, joining accessible group walking clubs, or exploring parks with audio trails and tactile maps. These activities allow you to enjoy nature while staying fit and connected.

3. Join Social Groups

Social engagement is just as important as physical activity. Join online support groups, local meetups, or virtual fitness and dance classes. Platforms like Zoom or Facebook offer communities where you can meet others, share experiences, and stay connected.

4. Assistive Tech for Communication

Stay connected with loved ones using voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri. These tools allow you to make calls, send messages, and stay on top of social updates hands-free. Screen readers and Braille displays also make it easy to stay involved in digital conversations.

5. Volunteer and Give Back

Volunteering can keep you socially connected and active. Look for local opportunities with organisations like ours or volunteer to teach assistive technology or mobility skills. Giving back helps you stay engaged while supporting your community.

6. Mindfulness and Relaxation

Don’t forget to care for your mental well-being. Use meditation apps like Calm or Headspace for relaxation or try audio-guided yoga sessions. Breathing exercises can also help you feel more centered and reduce stress.

Staying active and connected in 2025 is all about finding accessible activities that suit your lifestyle. With the right tools and support, you can enjoy a fulfilling year of health, connection, and independence.

At Guide Dogs Queensland, we’re here to help you explore these opportunities and make this year your best yet.
