The life of a Guide Dog Pup
Guide Dog Pups are always bound for greatness!
All of the pups in the Guide Dogs nursery go on to have a wonderful purpose in life. More than half of our dogs go on to have wonderful careers as a Guide Dog, a support dog, a court dog or a brand ambassador dog. (Some even leave a fluffy legacy behind like Alya!)
This leaves a small amount of dogs whose destiny is to become a loved and supported member of a forever family through our rehoming program – maybe even one like yours!

If you’re looking for a new addition to your family, you might like to consider rehoming a retired or reclassified dog.
By rehoming a dog, you would be giving them a safe and loving home while gaining a new family member of your own. These special dogs love spending time with people and make great companions.
Once you’ve expressed your interest, we’ll get in touch if we think we’ve found a dog that will be the paw-fect fit for you.
We receive many expressions of interest and it’s important that we choose families that will complement our dog’s personalities. Due to the success of our Guide Dogs and those who pursue alternate career paths, we have a limited number of dogs available in our rehoming program.
We consider every match a success because we know that they’re going on to their loving forever homes.
Meet some of our recently placed pups!
Usher found his forever home
We just love Usher and he has completed our family. He just loves to be with us every where we go and loves to play tug a war with his bones and tyre. One of the cutest things he does is pick up his blue elephant one of his carers gave him and he holds it in his paws and sucks it. It’s too cute!
He has made friends with our neighbours horses and loves swimming in our dam. We have 5 acres and he bolts around doing zoomies. He has sleepovers at his nans place and other family and friends when we go to stay. He’s such a good boy and makes friends easily, even with dogs that are not as social. We are so grateful for him and thank Renae for introducing us to him.
Phoenix is also enjoying his new stage of life
Phoenix is our baby we love him and have done ever since I picked him from the Bald Hills Centre – there was no way he wasn’t staying with us I told him that on the way home. Phoenix enjoys me working from home 2 days a week and on my RDO being spoilt by our local dog groomer. As you can see he is hard at work in the photo and he loves his blanket that was provided by the lady who cared for Phoenix – thankyou for your hard work that you do.
When we first brough Phoenix home I discovered that he is so loving and such a cuddler and it was apparent that the single recliner chair I was using had to go, Phoenix would climb up on me and cuddle in and then next minute he was snoring. So we have upgrade to a couch and Phoenix sits down one end so he can see who is coming at the front door and more importantly if anybody is in the kitchen. This way we still have our cuddles.
And Paddy has found love and happiness with his family!
It’s amazing just how much love, happiness and laughter that Paddy has brought into our lives and filling an emptiness that we didn’t even know that we had.
Paddy’s filled our lives and touched our hearts with his unconditional companionship, love, trust and devotion.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us the opportunity to give Paddy a good home.
What should you consider?
If you’re interested in opening your home to a furry new family member, there are some important things to consider.

You must live within 90 minutes of our Bald Hills site.
We pride ourselves on maintaining a relationship with the families who rehome one of our dogs. Due to this, we ask that people interested in rehoming a guide dog please live within 90 minutes of the Guide Dogs Nursery and Training Centre at Bald Hills. -
You are not guaranteed to find your paw-fect match.
As many of our dogs are successful in the guide dog program, there is only a small number available for rehoming. For this reason, we encourage families to continue looking for their perfect canine friend elsewhere as well. -
These dogs have been specially trained.
Your dog will be used to spending time around people. They will likely want to spend most of their time by your side. -
They need to be welcome in your home.
Your dog will have spent its life as an indoor dog, so you need to be willing to allow it to live and sleep inside your home. -
Your dog will come with ongoing costs.
Once the dog has become part of your family, they are your financial responsibility as with any other pet. -
If contacted about one of our dogs, you will need to confirm an adoption appointment within 7 days
From this time, you will have a 2 week trial prior to finalising adoption. -
Rehoming fee.
There is a rehoming fee of up to $3,000.
Some dogs have different career paths.
Whether it be due to a difference in temperament or even a lack of interest in their training, some dogs end up moving into a different job – and that’s ok!
While many dogs can be reclassified and move into new careers, others are best suited to being rehomed as a family pet. We’re always sad to see them go, but we love seeing them settle in with their new families!
From time to time we also have retired Guide Dogs looking for a new home to enjoy their golden years. These dogs also make excellent companions for those looking for a new best friend or family member.
