| “I was brought up with cars but my eyesight and epilepsy prevented me from being able to be involved in car racing,” Ian said.
“Instead I play games like Gran Turismo Sport and for someone who doesn’t see very well, it’s pretty good not to touch the walls of the track!” But Ian isn’t just in it for the racing, he also loves creating liveries for his cars – that’s the visual design of how they look. Spending more time at home recently has given him the perfect opportunity to delve into this passion project.
“Creating the liveries satisfies my creative side. Recently, I even got some help to create a Guide Dogs sticker to put on my cars. Guide Dogs has been so supportive and I just wanted to show that.” When he isn’t busy with his artistic pursuits, which also include woodcarving and writing, Ian runs a support group on the Sunshine Coast to help other people with vision loss. “I really enjoy being able to help people in different situations. We are all able to support each other,” Ian said.
While his vision is likely to continue deteriorating, Ian remains positive and will no doubt continue racing on tracks all over the world from his living room and supporting others to live their lives the way they want to. “I like to go at my own pace and that way I can cope with most things thrown my way. I’m very blessed with the different things I’ve been able to do and achieve.” |
