Feel safer. Build confidence. Learn practical skills.
We’re excited to be planning a new Self-Defence Program, with a proposed Term 4 commencement (October 2026), led by our new facilitator, Ben.
Ben brings a unique perspective as someone who trains and competes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo, and who lives with vision impairment himself. Having experienced the benefits of martial arts firsthand, Ben is passionate about making practical self-defence skills accessible to people who are blind or have low vision.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo are grappling martial arts. Rather than punching and kicking, everything is done by gripping and feeling. It’s an effective way of defending yourself that doesn’t rely on sight.
Each session builds practical skills you can use in everyday situations. You’ll learn how to stay calm under pressure, and how to handle yourself if someone gets too close.
What you can expect:
- Practical, effective techniques
- Hands-on guidance, adapted for people who are blind or have low vision
- Building confidence and physical awareness
- No previous experience needed
- No equipment needed
When: Fridays from 12:30pm – 1:30pm.
Where: Guide Dogs Queensland, Bald Hills
This program is currently subject to sufficient client interest, so we’d love to hear from anyone interested in participating and available to attend on Friday’s at 12:30pm.
The Self-Defence Program can be funded through NDIS Core Supports or attended on a fee-for-service basis.
If you would like a quote or would like to be added to the waitlist, please let me know and I will be happy to assist.
