Taking every step with Lisa

February 26, 2020

It is only because of your support that Queensland mum Lisa is able to show her young daughters that vision loss is not a barrier for aiming high.

One of the most exciting initiatives as part of our 60th anniversary is the Client Bursary Experience 2020 program – giving five clients the opportunity to have an experience they might not otherwise be able to do. With your generous donations, you are making wishes come true.

Mother-of-two Lisa McEwan will be conquering Mt Kilimanjaro with the Guide Dogs Queensland team in September, as one of the successful recipients of the Experience 2020 bursary. She says it is about proving to herself that she can do whatever she puts her mind to, and proving to her daughters, aged 7 and 10, that there are no limitations to what they can achieve.

“My sight may be limited, but my vision is huge,” Lisa said. “I perceive the world as full of possibility. I see challenges as opportunities to grow and learn. I want to advocate, help educate and hopefully inspire and motivate others to realise their own potential.

“But, I also want to encourage my two young daughters to have courage and pursue their dreams in whatever form they take. I want to encourage their resilience and show them that that you shouldn’t be defined by the negative expectations of others.”

Lisa thanked supporters for helping her on the journey since being diagnosed at birth with sclerocornea. “Thanks to the tools and skills you’ve equipped me with, and the love and support of my family, I’ve been able to minimise the limitations of my sight loss and focus instead on my abilities rather than a disability.”
